Building Community Power for Human Rights, Feminism and Social Justice.

Coalition for Grassroots Human Rights Defenders – Kenya (CGHRD-Kenya) is a grassroots feminist,women/human rights defenders social movement bringing together Grassroots Human Rights Defenders (GHRDs), feminists, women human rights defenders, SRHR advocates, climate justice activists, community organizers, and social justice movements. Rooted in communities and led by people who experience injustice firsthand, CGHRD-Kenya was built from a simple but powerful belief:
Communities are not victims of injustice. Communities are the solution. We organize, educate, protect, connect, and build collective power so that grassroots communities can shape their own futures and advance human rights, gender justice, democracy, and social transformation. Today, we work across Kenya while remaining deeply grounded in rural communities, informal settlements, and historically marginalized spaces.

Community is the Answer

Why CGHRD-Kenya exists:

Across Kenya and Africa, grassroots activists, feminists, and community organizers are often the first people communities turn to during crises. They respond to forced evictions, gender-based violence, femicide, political repression, climate disasters, hunger, inequality, discrimination, and attacks on human rights. Yet these same defenders are frequently excluded from protection systems, underfunded, isolated, and exposed to threats.

Protection gaps

Many defenders face threats, violence, exclusion, and limited access to safeguarding systems. We help strengthen community protection, care, and support.

Collective organizing

We mobilize women, feminists, defenders, and organizers into solidarity networks that can learn, respond, advocate, and transform together.

Movement building

We invest in long-term feminist organizing, political education, healing justice, community resilience, and grassroots infrastructure.

Rooted in lived experience

CGHRD-Kenya emerged from grassroots feminist organizing and community realities, building solidarity where women and defenders faced threats, exclusion, inequality, and limited access to justice.

Our Vision

A Kenya where human rights, feminist values, equality, dignity, and social justice are realized for all.

Our Mission

To mobilize, organize, and strengthen grassroots human rights defenders, feminists, and community organizers to advance human rights, gender justice, democratic participation, and community-led social transformation.

Our strategic pillars

Our work is organized around grassroots power, feminist education, protection, advocacy, and sustainable movement infrastructure.

1

Grassroots Organizing: mobilizing defenders, feminists, and community organizers into collective action and solidarity networks.

2

Feminist Political Education: strengthening rights awareness, SRHR, gender justice, social accountability, and civic participation.

3

Protection & Healing: community support, safeguarding, collective care, mental wellbeing, and healing justice spaces.

4

Policy & Advocacy: ensuring grassroots communities shape policies on women’s rights, justice, equality, SRHR, and social transformation.

5

Movement Sustainability: building feminist economies, food sovereignty, climate justice, and resilient community infrastructure.

Movement, not project.

We believe communities are not passive recipients. Communities are leaders, organizers, knowledge holders, and architects of justice.
