Building grassroots leadership, collective action, healing, and long-term transformation.

Who we are

We are a movement rooted in lived realities. CGHRD-Kenya mobilizes grassroots women human rights defenders, feminists, SRHR advocates, and community organizers to advance social justice, feminist leadership, collective care, and grassroots transformation.

How We Work

CGHRD-Kenya uses an intersectional feminist and human-rights-based approach. Rather than delivering solutions to communities, we work alongside communities to build collective power and leadership. Our work combines: Community organizing, Political education, Feminist movement building, Community protection and care, Policy advocacy, Narrative change, Knowledge creation and Movement sustainability. We believe social transformation requires both immediate action and long-term movement building.

Our Values

Feminist Leadership
We center the leadership, experiences, and voices of women, girls, and marginalized communities.
Community Power
We believe solutions must be led by communities directly affected by injustice.
Solidarity
We stand together across movements, identities, and struggles.
Collective Care
Sustainable movements require care, wellbeing, healing, and protection.
Accountability
We promote transparent, ethical, and community-driven leadership.
Intersectionality
We recognize that people experience multiple and overlapping forms of discrimination and inequality.

Where We Work

Our organizing work is rooted in:
Nairobi County

Machakos County

Migori County

Our offices are in: Mathare, Nairobi and Katangi , Machakos. At the same time, we collaborate with communities, movements, and partners across Kenya, Africa, and globally. Through networks such as the Pussy Power Movement and other regional alliances, we contribute to cross-border learning, solidarity, and feminist movement building.

Our strategic pillars

Our work combines grassroots organizing, feminist political education, community protection systems, policy advocacy, healing justice, and movement sustainability.

Grassroots Organizing and Community Power

Strong communities create lasting change. We support grassroots human rights defenders, feminists, and community organizers to organize collectively around issues affecting their lives. Our organizing work focuses on: Community mobilization, Leadership development, Grassroots movement building, Community dialogues, Collective action, Documentation of human rights violations and Building local solidarity networks. We strengthen communities to become active agents of change rather than passive recipients of support. .

Feminist Political Education and Leadership

Knowledge is power. Many injustices persist because communities are denied access to information and opportunities for critical reflection. Our political education programs create spaces where people can understand: Human rights, Feminism, Gender justice, Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), Democracy and governance, Climate justice, Economic justice, Social accountability and Movement building Through trainings, learning circles, leadership programs, podcasts, community forums, and popular education methodologies, we nurture a new generation of grassroots leaders. We invest in intergenerational learning that connects experienced activists with emerging organizers.

Community Protection, Care and Wellbeing

Movements cannot thrive if activists are constantly exhausted, isolated, threatened, or unsupported. In an increasingly hostile environment for civil society, human rights defenders, feminists, journalists, and community organizers face growing risks. CGHRD-Kenya promotes community-centered protection and collective care approaches that strengthen safety, resilience, and wellbeing. Our work includes: Safety and protection awareness, Feminist care practices, Psychosocial support referrals, Community solidarity systems, Emergency accompaniment through partnerships, Wellbeing and healing spaces, Digital safety awareness and Burnout prevention and movement care We understand protection not only as physical safety, but also as emotional, social, economic, and collective wellbeing. When communities care for one another, movements become stronger and more sustainable.

Policy Advocacy and Narrative Change

Communities must be at the center of decisions affecting their lives. We create pathways for grassroots voices to influence policies, public discourse, and governance processes. Our advocacy work focuses on:

Human Rights Defenders Protection -
Advancing recognition and protection of grassroots defenders.

Gender Justice -
Promoting women's rights and feminist policy agendas.

Ending Gender-Based Violence and Femicide -
Advocating for prevention, accountability, and survivor-centered responses.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights -
Defending bodily autonomy, dignity, and access to services.

Climate, Land and Environmental Justice -
Promoting equitable and community-centered climate solutions.

Food and Seed Sovereignty -
Protecting indigenous knowledge, local food systems, and community control over seeds and food production.

Equality and Non-Discrimination -
Challenging all forms of exclusion and marginalization.

Public Service Accountability -
Promoting equitable access to services and resources.

Alongside policy work, we invest heavily in narrative change by amplifying grassroots stories, experiences, and solutions.

Movement Infrastructure and Sustainability -

Movements need more than projects. They need systems, resources, leadership, relationships, and infrastructure that allow them to survive and grow. CGHRD-Kenya is helping build the foundations required for long-term social justice movements. Our movement sustainability work includes:
Leadership development
Organizational strengthening
Community resource mobilization
